The ongoing project “The Box” aims to identify the difference in demographics throughout various neighbourhoods in Toronto. Inspired by the street photographer Willem Jonkers, and their worms eye view street photography perspective. Up to now The Box has surveyed Leaside on Queen St East, Church St, and Bay and King. This project will be continued to capture a greater variety of neighbourhoods. The motive is to capture the essence and common trends of each area as the people walk through. To observe the chance of interaction with the piece, is it being ignored? A quick glance, or a full stop. Are there any differences in the subjects, how busy the streets are, people's fashion, and patterns such as groups. The images collected are moments when people are noticing, interacting, and some are ignoring the box. The outer walls have signs on them inviting the passerbyers to have a moment with the box. Images display a variety of people, who by fate were captured ambiguously on whatever time and day the project was set to be put out. Throughout the images you can observe that Leaside was the most interacted, believably due to the sudden change of weather. Less people are willing to stop when it’s extremely cold outside. This project I am wanting to continue in the warmer months, exploring more specific areas with longer time frames.
